West Sea

I have yet to visit the West Sea

as you could perhaps be there

Would the sea there be any different from other seas

In the black mudflat, tiny crabs will dart in and out of holes 

and faraway in thick mud, the sea will always toss and turn

For there, where you could stay

perhaps I should leave some places unvisited

For if I visit all, there will be no place left for you

My unvisited side of the sea

its waves are always crashing only in my heart

서 해

아직 서해엔 가보지 않았습니다

어쩌면 당신이 거기 계실지 모르겠기에

그곳 바다인들 여느 바다와 다를까요

검은 개펄에 작은 게들이 구멍 속을 들락거리고

언제나 바다는 멀리서 진펄에 몸을 뒤척이겠지요

당신이 계실 자리를 위해

가보지 않은 곳을 남겨두어야 할까 봅니다

내 다 가보면 당신 계실 곳이 남지 않을 것이기에

내 가보지 않은 한쪽 바다는

늘 마음 속에서나 파도치고 있습니다

이성복은 1952년 경북 상주에서 태어나 경기고등학교를 졸업하고 서울대학교 불어불문학과를 졸업했다. 1977년 시 “정든 유곽에서"로 등단하고 1980년 한국 현대시의 방향에 크게 이바지한 작품으로 꼽히는 첫 시집 『뒹구는 돌은 언제 잠 깨는가』를 내었다. 그는 의식에 대한 탐구를 통해 감수성과 상상력을 더욱 부각시킨다. 대표작으로는 『뒹구는 돌은 언제 잠 깨는가』, 『어둠 속의 시』와 『래여애반다라』가 있다.

Lee Seong-Bok was born in 1952 in Sangju, South Korea. He graduated from Kyunggi High School and majored in French Language and Literature at Seoul National University. He made his debut in 1977 with his poem, “In My Beloved Brothel,” and came out with his first poetry collection, When Will the Rolling Stone Awaken?, in 1980, which is considered a shaping force in modern Korean poetry. He amplifies his sentimentality and imagination through exploring the consciousness. His works include When Will the Rolling Stone Awaken?, Poetry in the Dark, and Come To Be Sorrowful.
